I am Marie-Curie fellow (Postdoctoral Researcher) at the Centre for Sustainable Development – CDO @ Ghent University where I work my project titled “Crowdsourcing Urban Sustainability Governance. Exploring innovative governance models for addressing urban sustainability through ICT-people interaction“. As such I am  member of the BeNeLux Chapter, the Italian Chapter and the Events and Network working group of the Marie Curie Alumni Association.

My research interests lie at the junction of the two macro areas of Science, Society & Technology studies and Space, Society & the Environment. I’m interested in innovative modes of geographical production, planning and governance performed by heterogeneous, multilayered and multiscalar networks, most notably how these networks assemble and negotiate socio-environmental issues, and how the material and semiotic implications of their agency is brought to the public fore.

Principal research topics include the politics of space and place; the social understanding of nature and technology (including current developments in environmental theory); the effects of informal urban planning practices, and the role of new ICTs in urban sustainability governance. From a methodological perspective I often use the Material Semiotic framework and a range of participatory science & politics approaches (particularly Action Research).

I holds a degree in Philosophy of Science from the University of Rome La Sapienza (2003); a Master in Environmental Communication from the University of Pisa  Human and Environmental Sciences Department (2004); and a PhD in Political Science from the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa (2009).

Before joining the CDO I have been research fellow at Sant’Anna School – Dirpolis Institute and Institute of Management, working on the governance and planning for sustainable cities and communities (2014-2017); and on the development of environmental political theory (2009-2013).

In the meanwhile, I has been invited guest professor on Spatial and Environmental Justice and Urban Gardens Planning at the BOKU University of Vienna (2016); and visiting researcher at The Open University  Geography Department, UK (2007), at the Université Paris La Sorbonne – SciencePo, France (2011), at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, LMU, Germany (2012) and at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Ghent University, Belgium (2013).

More recently, I have been nominated adjunct professor in Environment and Society (Cultural Geography) at the Department of Science for Peace  University of Pisa (2014-2017), and in Development Studies at Sant’Anna School (2017), while I obtained the italian professorship habilitation in Geography (sector 11/B1) in 2017.

Since january 2016, I served as Director of the IRTA Leonardo  Research Institute on Territory and Environment, an interdepartmental research center supported by the University of Pisa and the Sant’Anna School. I am affiliate fellow of the Sustainability Management Lab  at Institute of Management , Sant’Anna School; external collaborator at the Responsible Management  Research Center, Pisa University; Alumna of the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, LMU, Munich and Senior Research Fellow of the Earth System Governance Research Network, Lund University; and  I collaborate as affiliate member with the Open Space Research Centre at The Open University, Milton Keynes.

In past years I also experienced researching on rural development as research fellow at the Department of Economics, University of Pisa (2005); and on urban environmental sustainability as research assistant at the Province of Rome (2005).

Apart from my academic activity, I consulted and worked as internal with environmental NGOs (Legambiente, Greenpeace, ASud – which I contributed at establishing in 2003, and Fondazione dei Diritti Genetici); and the National Institute of Statistics, Structural Business Statistics Dep. (2010-2012). Presently I am member of the Scientific Committee Legambiente Nazionale. On this position I collaborate with the Working Group on “Disuguaglianze ambientali- Disuguaglianze sociali”; and the Forum Disuguaglianza e Diversità, Action-Research #5 “Intrappolati nel degrado” [“Trapped in degradation”].

As Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society with IBG  I am engaged with the research groups Geographies of Justice Research Group, Participatory Geographies Research Group, Planning and Environmental Research Group and Urban Geography Research Group. As member of the AGeI – Associazione dei Geografi Italiani I took part in the research group “Geografia dell’ambiente” (Geography and Environment) and “Geografia dell’Innovazione e dell’Informazione” (Geography of Innovation and Information).
